The Volcano Park and Thermal Sea Resort Area is located in Tengchong, a hidden gem in southwest China’s Yunnan province. It’s certified as one of the national 5A-level scenic areas in 2016 which was featured with unique volcanic hot spring resources. Currently, the Resort Area mainly operates tourist and health care programs, including volcanoes and geothermal hot springs sightseeing, hot spring recreational activities, hot spring boutique resort, fine food, creative products about hot spring culture, and volcanic hot spring health care.

Tengchong Volcano Park and Thermal Sea Resort Area- Volcano Park Scenic Area

Characterized by complete types of volcanoes, new erupted eras, rich species and unusual landscape, the Volcano Park Scenic Area is a national geological park integrating volcano sightseeing, outdoor recreation, health care, geological and scientific research and science popularization education. It’s certified as one of the national 5A-level scenic areas in 2016 as an important part of the Volcano Park and Thermal Sea Resort Area.

The main attractions include Dakong Mountain, Xiaokong Mountain, Heikong Mountain, Shenzhu Valley (columnar joints), and Black Fish River. Except for the volcanic cones, the scenic area is covered by the overflow lava after the volcanic eruption, and the surrounding volcanic landscape is typical. Overlooking from the top of the volcanic cone of the Dakong Mountain, you can have a panoramic view of the large area of lava and volcanic plateau. It’s even more surprising that the volcanic cones in the park are distributed like the Big Dipper with the Heikong Mountain, Dakong Mountain and Xiaokong Mountain forming the spoon handle, and the nearby Jiao Mountain, Chengzilou, Datuan Mountain, Xiaotuan Moutain forming the spoon body by seen from the sky or the satellite imagery, which makes people cannot help marveling at the magic of nature. The Longchuan River to the east of the volcanic group passes along the edge of the volcanic plateau, and the water running for 10,000 years has lifted the veil of “Shenzhu Valley”, making it possible to show it to the world today. “Shenzhu” is scientifically known as columnar joints, which are usually clustered and honeycomb-shaped polygonal stone columns. These columns are mostly hexagonal, some are heptagonal, pentagonal or tetragonal. The large columns have a diameter of about 3 m, and small ones only 4 cm. The columns in the Shenzhu Valley are mainly up to 100 m high with upright, fallen, curved and radial postures. Qushi (which means curved stone in Chinese) Town where the Shenzhu Valley resides got the name just because of the large number of curved columnar joints here. The Shenzhu Valley is home to a group of columnar joints with the most peculiar shape, most complete preservation and most recent formation age found in China so far.

In the vicinity of the Shenzhu Valley, an underground dark river with constant temperature in all seasons and a water flow of up to 1,400 liters per second rushes out from the mountainside. The water is as clear as a mirror, cool and sweet, and is rich in lithium, silicon, strontium and other trace elements that are beneficial to human body. It is named after the numerous small black fish that come out of the water outlet in summer and autumn. The Black Fish River is a low-temperature spring where the underground dark river spouts out after being blocked by the lava erupted from the volcano, and becomes a beautiful landscape created by the volcanic activities.

　Tengchong Volcano Park and Thermal Sea Resort Area- Thermal Sea Scenic Area

The Thermal Sea Scenic Area boasts the richest geothermal resources of Tengchong, and one of the top 3 geothermal regions in China. Its good reputation of “an expanse of thermal sea” can be traced back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. The geothermal resources here have multiple prominent features, such as fumaroles, steaming ground, boiling springs, geysers, hot spring sinter and hydrothermal explosions. Its heat discharges are equivalent to burn 270,000 tons of standard coal a year. To date, the active magma pocket with a diameter of about 15 km and a depth of only 7 km still constantly supply thermal energy to the scenic area.

The hot springs in the Thermal Sea are volcanic hot springs represented by sulfur springs, bicarbonate springs and radon and fluorine springs which are of extremely high temperature, extremely soft water, suitable for life, and extremely high mineralization. These hot springs are rich in free gold, so they enjoy a good reputation of “gold spring” with a high rating for their quality in China. 8 of 12 kinds of mineral springs which have medical functions in China can be found in the scenic area. The high-temperature springs suitable for steaming and inhaling are even rare in the world, and are known as “hot springs in hundreds of kinds”. Today, there is still a proverb that says “when you come by back carrying, in a sedan chair or using a walking stick, you can leave with head and chest high and vigorous strides” spread among the people.

　Tengchong Volcano Park and Thermal Sea Resort Area- Hot Springs

Yugu Hot Spring is built according to the mountain topography, and covers an area of 10,530 m2.
